The Sunday Post: Doomsday Has Begun
Hello, friends, and welcome back to The Sunday Post. I am out of town this weekend with my family (and writing some of this from my phone- don’t ask), so I am going to get right into it.
The 5th annual Friendlee Awards votes have been counted and will be revealed TOMORROW in a brand-new podcast from Kyle and Robby. Thank you to all of the FFW+ listeners who took the time to vote!
Please remember also to support our sponsors at Homage and Panel Bound Comics. Support us by supporting them!
Now over to…
THE WATERCOOLER
THIS WEEK IN THE MCU
The fourth (and final?) teaser for Avengers: Doomsday was released by Marvel Studios last week. Featuring King M’Baku, Shuri, Namor, and Ben Grimm, it was the first time fans have seen characters from the FF Universe interact with our MCU heroes. In case you missed it, Kyle recorded a solo Marvelette with his thoughts.
Afterwards, the Russo Brothers posted on their Instagram page that these have not been teasers or trailers, but rather stories. Hit us up over on Discord if you have some theories about what they mean.
What you’ve been watching for the last four weeks… are not teasers. Or trailers.
They are stories. They are clues…
Pay attention.
#DoomsdayHasBegun
Marvel also now has a live Doomsday Clock running on their YT page, counting down the eleven (yes, eleven) months remaining until the movie’s December 18th release date.
I don’t typically promote other podcasts in this newsletter, but when it is the Official Marvel Podcast, I make an exception. The main guest this week was Marvel’s Head of Television and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, and he previewed the year ahead for Marvel on the small screen. From Wonder Man to Daredevil: Born Again to VisionQuest, Winderbaum provides a lot of insight.
Don’t look now, but Wonder Man is less than 10 days away! The social embargo ends on Thursday, so be on the lookout for thoughts from Kyle, Robby, and me. In the meantime, make sure you are following Marvel Studios and creator/director Destin Daniel Cretton on Instagram, where they are promoting the show on a daily basis.
BEYOND THE MULTIVERSE
I am Star Wars-agnostic (sorry, I have never seen any of the movies or shows), but even I recognize the seismic nature of the news from Lucasfilm last week that President Kathleen Kennedy would be stepping down after 14 years at the helm of the production company. She leaves a legacy of five films that grossed nearly $6 billion dollars and some extraordinarily successful television shows, but also some misfires and a lot of announced projects that never came to fruition, for one reason or another. Fans of the franchise had mixed opinions (at best) of her stewardship.
She is handing the reins over to Dave Filoni (who will handle creative decisions) and Lynwen Brennan (who will handle business decisions). It is not entirely unlike the current set-up at DC Studios with James Gunn and Peter Safran. For more on Kennedy’s decision to step down, I recommend Deadline’s exit interview, posted on Thursday (but conducted in December).
TRUE BELIEVERS RUMOR OF THE WEEK
Legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont, for the second time in the last year, appeared to confirm Famke Janssen’s return as Jean Grey in Avengers: Doomsday during an interview. Fans were disappointed when she was not included in the initial cast reveal last March, and for her part, Janssen has continued to deny any involvement in the movie. Is Claremont just speculating, or is he privy to inside information?
Robby had a busy week, so no comic pick tonight, but thank you to everyone who continues to read and listen every week.
Don't miss the Friendlee Award results on tomorrow's new episode of Friends From Work.
Have a great week,
-Greg
