The Sunday Post: Here Comes the Doom
Hello, friends, and welcome back to The Sunday Post. As I promised a week ago, Marvel Studios had a major presence at CinemaCon on Thursday, debuting the teaser trailer to attendees for Avengers: Doomsday, and I will have all the details later in The Watercooler.
But first, Daredevil: Born Again continues rolling along. Last week’s episode was my personal favorite of the season, but it didn’t click for everyone, including our own Kyle Schonewill. If you missed it, check out last week’s pod where Kyle broke it all down with Robby.
This week’s episode, Requiem, premieres Tuesday night and for anyone worried that last week’s slower-paced character study was going to become a trend, your worries will quickly be alleviated. Stay tuned on Wednesday for Robby and Kyle’s reactions on the podcast.
With that out of the way, let’s break down everything that happened at CinemaCon over at…
THE WATERCOOLER
THIS WEEK IN THE MCU

Sony kicked off CinemaCon with some first looks at Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (out on June 18th, 2027) and a pair of brand new posters for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Marvel brought all the big guns on Thursday, as President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans took the stage to promote Avengers: Doomsday. They reconfirmed their commitment to releasing the movie on December 18th and introduced Infinity Vision, a new certification criteria for PLF (premium large format) screens across the country. Is this a transparent attempt to counteract the fact that Dune Part Three has exclusive access to IMAX-branded screens for the first three weeks of Doomsday’s release? Absolutely, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a smart marketing tool for Marvel.
Feige and company also revealed that the September 25th re-release of Avengers: Endgame will include new footage that carries over to Doomsday. Director Joe Russo elaborated on that Saturday night at the Sands Film Festival.
“It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame. It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way, and because the movie was so successful, we have an opportunity to re-release it. You don’t always get the chance to re-release because it costs money, so the fact that we can enhance the story of Doomsday by bridging it to Endgame and these characters that we worked with for years that we love so much, and continue their story: It’s a really unique opportunity.”
The Marvel Studios team then showed the full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday for the first time, and it received such a boisterous reaction that they played it again. Unfortunately, the trailer has not yet been released publicly. You can find detailed descriptions online. The only thing I will confirm here is that Kathryn Newton is officially returning as Cassie Lang for the movie. The actress confirmed it herself on Instagram.
Feige and the Russo Brothers sat down with Fandango after the panel for an exclusive 12-minute interview that you can watch above. They talk about why this was the right time to bring back Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, what it was like filming with 35+ actors on set, and how Doomsday and Secret Wars work together differently than Infinity War and Endgame.
Feige also gave a separate interview to Entertainment Weekly where he talked about the opportunities presented by this movie.
"We're not talking too much about story, but I think people know that the story of Doomsday is inspired by a very famous comic run in which universes are colliding and earths encounter one another and different timelines encounter one another. And in movie speak, what that allows us to do is get different casts from different franchises. I was a part of the first couple many, many, many, many, many years ago. Now that they're back home, we thought: We have to utilize them. Deadpool & Wolverine was our first opportunity to do that and touch upon it, and it just felt like an amazing opportunity to pit multiple universes against each other, but you care about all of them."
Finally, Walt Disney Studios released a brand-new synopsis and cast list for the movie following the panel. The new synopsis reads: In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. The new cast list officially confirmed the return of Alex Livinalli as Attuma and Mabel Cadena as Namora. Also listed among the cast, in an unnamed role, is young actor Wesley Holloway. Could Holloway be playing Franklin Richards?
In non-Doomsday news, Seth Kearsley (director of the animated Adam Sandler film Eight Crazy Nights) revealed that he is working on an unannounced project for Marvel Animation.
BEYOND THE MULTIVERSE
News broke on Saturday that legendary Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance has been cast in The Batman Part II as the father of Harvey Dent. Dance joins Sebastian Stan (as Harvey Dent) and Scarlett Johansson (as Gilda Dent) alongside the returning cast.
TRUE BELIEVERS RUMOR OF THE WEEK
My favorite rumor of the weekend came from the Twitter user @lakersspammer, who claims that Nell Fisher (Stranger Things 5) is being looked at for a role in Avengers: Secret Wars. Could she be a good fit as Franklin’s sister, Valeria Richards?
PANEL BOUND COMICS PICK OF THE WEEK
Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis
In honor of the new season of Daredevil: Born Again, I decided to go back and revisit some of my favorite Daredevil stories — specifically the Bendis/Maleev, Brubaker/Lark, and Waid/Samnee runs. It’s quite the stretch (even if you do have to make it through “Shadowland”). And it all kicks off with this — the first volume of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev’s epic crime saga that helped inspire Netflix’s Daredevil and continues to inspire Daredevil: Born Again. (There’s a reason Bendis is credited as a consultant for season 2.) This volume also features one of my favorite DD stories of all time — the criminally underrated “Wake Up” from Bendis and David Mack.
If you’ve ever wondered why folks are always talking up Daredevil comics, just crack this open and see if you can put it down. So grab your copy from our friends at Panel Bound Comics and remember to use code “FRIENDSFROMWORK” for a discount on your purchase.

Thank you, Robby, for another great recommendation, and thank you to everyone out there who always takes the time to read our newsletter. Enjoy Daredevil: Born Again on Tuesday, and we’ll see you back here again next Sunday.
Have a great week,
-Greg
