The Sunday Post: Waiting Game
Hello friends, and welcome back to The Sunday Post, where we are still waiting for that first Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer. Yes, despite the many rumors and whispers over the last few weeks, there has been no indication from Marvel Studios that a trailer is imminent.
At least, there wasn’t until Friday afternoon when The Hollywood Reporter dropped a bombshell- Kevin Feige and the Russos are planning not just one trailer, but FOUR interconnected trailers to be released over the next four weeks. Here’s the catch- each trailer will be attached to Avatar: Fire & Ash (which releases on Friday, 12/19) and run for one week exclusively in theaters.
That has caused quite a bit of consternation online, including on our Friends From Work Discord server. Is it a clever marketing technique meant to emphasize the theatrical experience, or a desperate attempt to boost the box office of the biggest (per-movie) franchise in movie history? My (potentially hot) take is that it is more the former than the latter. The Avatar franchise does not need any marginal boost in ticket sales, and Marvel Studios has a history of unique and clever marketing campaigns (The New Avengers twist on Thunderbolts* was only 7 months ago!). Plus, other movies with no ties to Disney are also expected to have theatrical-only trailers when Avatar is released. Both The Odyssey and Steven Spielberg’s mysterious new blockbuster are rumored to be prepping trailers for next weekend.
Presumably, these trailers will make their way onto the internet (legally) not long after their debut. The Avatar: Fire & Ash teaser trailer was also exclusive to theaters during the opening weekend of The Fantastic Four: First Steps; the studio released it online the following Monday. I would not be surprised if Marvel Studios follows this same pattern, although they may wait until all four trailers have debuted before releasing them all as one contiguous trailer online in January.
Until then, Kyle and Robby remain on standby, ready to react to the Doomsday trailer(s) when they arrive. ON FFW+ this week, Kyle listened! He watched the entire first season of Netflix’s Punisher, and he took time to chat with Neil and share his thoughts.
Now over to…
THE WATERCOOLER
THIS WEEK IN THE MCU
Wonder Man marketing is really flying under the radar right now. But if you’ve been paying attention, it is out there, including the above spoof of “Actors on Actors” (and several other real-life Hollywood promotions). There has also been viral marketing seen on benches, buses, and billboards around Hollywood, promoting Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley’s character) as an acting coach. There was also this spoof interview between Slattery and real-life journalist and host of Turner Classic Movies, Ben Mankiewicz.
The Hollywood Reporter’s “Heat Vision” blog confirmed that composer Michael Giacchino will be returning to score Tom Holland’s next MCU adventure in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Paul Bettany was profiled by The Telegraph in the UK last week, and may have just teased his return for Avengers: Secret Wars, which films next summer.
“I think I’ve got some Avengers duties next year. I think journalists imagine we have a mountain of scripts, and that’s not true. It’s not like I’m turning down [Mexican auteur] Alfonso Cuarón to go and do Marvel movies – Alfonso Cuarón just hasn’t called.”
BEYOND THE MULTIVERSE
One major 2026 Comic Book Movie did release a trailer last week, and that was Supergirl. The first teaser for the movie starring Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) showcased the many differences between Kara Zor-El and the Man of Steel. DC Studios also confirmed that Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man and Eternals) will be composing the score. Supergirl is scheduled for release on June 26th, 2026.
TRUE BELIEVERS RUMOR OF THE WEEK
How about one more Avengers: Doomsday rumor for today? Reportedly, each trailer will end with a clock counting down to the Doomsday release date in real time. That would be pretty cool if true, reminiscent of Oppenheimer.
PANEL BOUND COMICS PICK OF THE WEEK
SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW

Robby isn’t here this week, but I just wanted to pop in with a quick recommendation. If you watched the Supergirl trailer above, you may have noticed a quick advertisement at the end for fans to “read where it all began”. Well, that comic featured in the ad (and a huge influence on the plot of the movie) is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and it is available through our partners at Panel Bound Comics.
I have read it, and it is a fantastic book from writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. Probably my favorite book featuring a Kryptonian protagonist. Over at PBC, you have two options. You can pre-order the “compact” edition, which will be released on January 6th and only set you back $6. Or, and this would be my recommendation, you can order the beautiful deluxe hardcover that came out last year. It is on sale right now for just $40, and you’ll get an additional discount if you use the code “FRIENDSFROMWORK”. Trust me on this one.
That’s all I have for this week. Are you planning to see Avatar: Fire & Ash this weekend? Does the prospect of getting an early look at Avengers: Doomsday change your calculus? Let me know at the Bluesky link below or on Discord!
I’ll be out of town next Sunday, but I’m still hoping to have an abbreviated edition of TSP ready for y’all.
Have a great week,
-Greg
